Dementia and nutrition

Across our Homes, we are really passionate about the physical and mental health and well-being of our residents and understand that nutrition and hydration are absolutely key to keeping people well.

Nellsar is one of the first Care Home groups to recognise the importance of nutrition for the elderly and those with Dementia and we have introduced a dedicated Head of Nutrition and Wellness and ‘Nutrition Champions’ within our Homes.

Prolonged consumption of a nutrient-poor diet may lead some individuals to become malnourished and this can result in a higher risk of health problems, feelings of fatigue, confusion and anxiety. We work hard to ensure we provide fresh, well-balanced, home-cooked meals. Our Chefs work closely with our Head of Nutrition and Wellness to develop different tailored menus and recipes that focus on beneficial nutritional aspects, such as protein.

We also prepare a colourful variety of smoothies and snacks and provide ‘hydration stations’ for our residents to keep them well-fuelled and hydrated throughout the day. Our team members encourage those in their care to try new foods and flavours, and we ensure that meal plans are designed around an individual, as we recognise that some residents may prefer smaller, more frequent meals, or require higher calorific content or pureed foods.

It is said that the first bite of a meal is with the eye and we couldn’t agree more! Our dishes are presented beautifully, to entice and delight our residents every day.

Dining

For many Care Home residents, mealtimes are the most important times of the day. Dining brings so much into their lives, offering an opportunity to be sociable, to experience interesting and stimulating flavours and to change environment. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the finer things in life, such as sitting at a table decorated with fresh flowers and enjoying a sense of dignity and occasion.

We have a dedicated team of Dining Assistants who are there to ensure all residents enjoy a high-quality dining experience every mealtime. They make sure all dining areas are properly prepared and made inviting for residents, and they are on hand to help serve and support during meals. Assistance is always available for those who are less able and for residents who choose to eat in their rooms.
