Dementia and relaxation
Residents with Dementia can feel confused and anxious, and the nature of the disease can mean they experience episodes of aggression. We are fully equipped to help calm these times by offering reassurance and meaningful distractions to help bring them back to feelings of contentment and safety.
Our Recreation and Well-Being Champions are skilled in providing a range of soothing activities to relax those who feel agitated.
Sensory room
Some of our Homes have specially equipped sensory rooms, which combine a range of light and bubble tubes, fibre optic strands, tactile materials, projectors and sounds to help relax participants. The visual and auditory stimulation is designed to have a soothing effect – soft sounds of the sea or rainforest, for example, can help residents drift away into calm relaxation, or sometimes sleep!
Pet Therapy
Many of our Homes have regular visits from Pet Therapy animals. A wonderful array of dogs, rabbits, Guinea pigs, horses, even snakes and llamas have come to spend time with our residents! We also enjoy raising and looking after our own pets. These have included chickens and ducks hatched from eggs, fish and Guinea pigs. Their presence is often eagerly anticipated and brings out feelings of love, attachment and comfort amongst those taking part. Animals calm and relax those they come into contact with and engaging with them can spark happy memories of a beloved pet from the past.
Magic table
Some of our Homes have a specialist ‘Magic table’. These are designed to help residents who have mid to late-stage Dementia relax and reminisce, through simple interactive graphics and games, such as sweeping leaves away or prompting old sayings. They encourage socialisation, as they can be used for group activities or played with young relatives and grandchildren when they visit.
