Moving in to a Nellsar Care Home

Who should I inform about my move?

Apart from your family and friends, you may wish to let others know about your move such as Royal Mail, utility companies and service providers, your bank, TV licensing, pension provider, your local Borough Council, telephone provider and insurance provider. We can help you prepare for this if you require assistance

Should I inform my doctor about my move?

Should you wish to keep your own GP you are welcome to do so, but we would recommend you speak to them before you move to make sure they are happy to support your request. Please be assured all our Care Homes are regularly visited by local GPs, dentists and opticians.

Should I consider insurance cover?

Nellsar Care Homes policies provide insurance cover for residents’ clothing and some personal effects, but we advise that you arrange separate insurance for your more valuable items. Upon arrival to the Home, a list of your property and valuables will be completed with you and updated as required. For further information regarding your personal effects, safe storage and insurance cover, the Home Manager will be happy to assist.

Do I need to organise my clothing and laundry?

Do I need to organise my clothing and laundry? Our laundry staff will take great care to ensure your personal clothing is laundered, ironed and returned to your room promptly, but should you prefer, family or friends are welcome to assist with the washing of more delicate items. Due to the volume of laundry within the Home, it is essential for all clothing to be labelled with sewn in name tags. Should you require help with this, our laundry assistants will be happy to advise you.

Can I bring my pet to the Home?

The acceptance of small pets is at the discretion of the Home Manager. Should family or friends wish to bring in pets to visit, we ask that they check with a member of staff in the first instance.

Can I bring my own furniture with me?

It is important that you personalise your room when you arrive, and we welcome you to bring in appropriate items of your own furniture (please note, these must be fire retardant). If you prefer, your furniture may be delivered by prior arrangement in readiness for your arrival. We also encourage you to bring in smaller items such as ornaments and pictures for that added touch of comfort.

What about my mobility aid(s) and electrical appliances?

If you already have your own wheelchair, you are welcome to bring it with you and mobility scooters can be used in garden and outside areas.
All electrical appliances must go through the portable appliance testing (PAT) process which the Home will complete free of charge. The Home Manager will advise you regarding additional electrical items, their installation and any costs that might be incurred.

What can I expect on the day I move into the Home?

Upon arrival, you will be met by a senior member of staff and your key carer. They will have planned and prepared ahead to ensure a warm welcome to you and will help you to settle in.
Your key carer will take the time to listen and get to know you and your needs. They will discuss your care plan and ensure your room is prepared for your arrival, helping you to unpack and arrange the room to your liking. You will also be visited by the Chef who will explain the menus to you and listen to your food and drink preferences.
In some circumstances, new residents move to the Home directly from hospital, which means that their arrival time might be late in the afternoon or early evening. On these occasions, you will be met on arrival by a senior team member and you will receive a warm and comforting welcome by the staff on duty. At the very latest, you will be introduced to your key carer the following morning. The Chef will also be informed of your pending arrival and will arrange to meet with you during your first day with us.
On move day, if you would like to invite your nearest and dearest to join you, the Chef will be delighted to prepare a meal for you, providing a further opportunity for a comfortable and reassuring move into your new home.
We encourage your family and friends to feel part of the community of the Home and invite them to visit for as long and as often as they and you would like.
