Champion fundraising efforts across Nellsar to support Alzheimers and Macmillan charities

Throughout September, many of our Homes across the Nellsar Care Group took up the challenge to be ‘Champion Fundraisers’ with the aim to raise money for two important charities – The Alzheimer’s Society and Macmillan Cancer Research.

September was World Alzheimer’s Month and marked the 10th anniversary of the global awareness campaign (with World Alzheimer’s Day being on Tuesday 21 September), whilst Macmillan’s popular National Coffee Morning was held on Friday 24 September – so it was the perfect month to support both charities who do so much to help individuals and their families every year.

Launching the initiative, our Recreation and Well-Being Manager Viv Stead commented;

“As we all know, it’s been a tough couple of years for our fantastic charities who work tirelessly to research, support and pioneer treatments that impact us all; the pandemic has hit our charities really hard and they are struggling. We would like to do our bit this year for the charities that we have supported in the past and that are dear to our hearts. It’s up to you to be as imaginative as you like; shave your head, sing along, sponsored walk or raffle. Get families and residents involved, and have some fun whilst helping out these great causes.”

We were delighted to see so many of our residents, staff, families and local communities get involved in fundraising;

The team at Abbotsleigh Care Home organised a walk down to the bottom of their driveway (around half a mile), with residents walking with family members or being pushed in wheelchairs by loved ones. They also held a cake sale, with refreshments for everyone after their walk. They raised a wonderful £267.50 from their Alzheimer’s Memory Walk and £143.59 for Macmillan.

Three of our Homes hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning and collectively raised over £200 from the sale of their delicious cakes; Bromley Park Care Home raised £80, Lukestone Care Home £80.50 and Lulworth House Residential Care Home £42 – a wonderful effort.

Woodstock Residential Care Home hosted a fundraising walk to their local park (or the option of walking around their garden) with their residents and families. They also ran a raffle and cake sale. Their collected donations totalled £735 for the Alzheimer’s Society, which was matched with another £735 through the Barclays charity support scheme.

Sonya Lodge Residential Care Home held their very own charity Bake Off, with 12 fantastic cake, cupcake and scone entries from staff and residents up for judging, plus a charity raffle. The team raised a fantastic £190.50 for Macmillan and £190.50 for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Viv announced the collective results on Wednesday 6 October;

I am delighted to say that as a Group we raised a total of £2464.50 for Macmillan Cancer Support and The Alzheimer’s Society!! A truly tremendous effort by all of the Homes who took part, either by walking with residents and families or baking, or both! I think I broke the record on the cake eating front, sampling 12 at Sonya Lodge! Our Winners Trophy goes to the team at Woodstock who raised a massive £735 through their charity walk, cakes donated by their local Oasis School and a raffle. Huge congratulations to them and thank you to everyone who got involved.”

Nellsar’s Managing Director, Martin Barrett will match the amount raised by our Homes for Nellsar’s total donation and was extremely proud of everyone who took part;

“I am always proud of you all. You work so hard and still find time to care that little bit more. As usual, Nellsar raises the bar. Thank you all.”
