Remembering D-Day at Meyer House Care Home

Our residents chose to remember D-Day on Thursday 6 June with a day of reminiscence and music.

We decked out our lounge with Union Jack flags and bunting, as well as Union Jack and poppy themed table decorations.

Our ladies and gents watched the D-Day services with the rest of the country on television in the morning and we then introduced some memorabilia from World War 2 to share and spark memories. These interesting items included:

  • Ration books
  • Cook’s pamphlet and recipes
  • Newspaper
  • Identity papers
  • Adverts for various items and jobs
  • Copies of letter and postcards
  • World at War book

As part of the day we also ran a quiz and listened to wartime songs, which our residents really enjoyed.

In the afternoon, we were delighted to welcome singer Hayley to our Home, who gave a wonderful performance of songs entitled ‘Those to be remembered‘ which was very uplifting. Our residents enjoyed drinks and singing along during her show.

It was a lovely celebration of a very special day to remember.
