Here at Abbotsleigh Care Home, we never do anything by halves. When we hold a special event, we go all out to ensure that everyone gets involved and residents have a truly authentic day of entertainment and reminiscence. Friday 8 May marked the 70th Anniversary of the end of WW2 in 1945 and we had our very own party here in the Home, to mark the occasion.
We decorated the Home with Union Jack flags, posters, banners and bunting in patriotic colours. Barry Barton provided the musical entertainment with his wartime music and sing-a-longs, and residents and visitors enjoyed a wonderful, nostalgic “wartime” lunch including Spam, Corned Beef Hash and Treacle Pudding with custard.
Staff, residents and their families really entered into the spirit of things and our Activities Co-Ordinator dressed as a Land Army girl; Others wore turbans and aprons which were typical of that era. Everyone truly had a great time and spirits were high. A particular highlight was a rendition by staff and residents of “We’ll Meet Again’ ‘ with Barry Barton’s help.
At 3pm residents enjoyed watching the Cenotaph ceremony on television with a cup of tea, cakes and the contents of their momento “Ration Boxes” which included a bar of chocolate.
Life is to be lived and we fully embrace that here at Abbotsleigh Care Home. We care for many residents who have limited mobility or mental capacity, but they are included all the same in all the Activities and Events that we put on. Our focus is to ensure there is something for everyone, regardless of age or ability.
