Our History
Established in 1988, we own and manage 13 care facilities around the South Home Counties, offering high quality accommodation for up to 600 residents – including Permanent, Respite, Weekend and Day Care.
We have a mix of purpose-built and more ‘home-from-home’ environments which should suit most tastes. Some of our facilities are Grade II listed buildings with modern, sympathetic refurbishments. Homes at the other end of the spectrum are modern, purpose-built facilities that have more in common with a private hospital than ‘a care home’ in most respects.
We are committed to achieving the highest standards of professional and personalised care, and we aim to be at the forefront of modern Dementia Care by effectively using new technologies to support our family approach.
Nellsar remains fully family owned and managed.
From small beginnings…
Mr and Mrs Ragumoorthy started Nellsar as a way of helping to support the elderly in their community. They purchased their first Care Home in 1988 and soon realised that their inclusive approach was proving very popular. As time went on the Home was extended to allow up to eight people to reside. It was then that a business was born.
Mr Ragumoorthy, (or Ragu as the world knows him), decided to leave his job as a civil engineer and devote his time to finding and building new facilities that would suit the people needing care.
Mrs Ragumoorthy threw all of her energies into finding the best, most caring team members and making the Homes appealing places to live and thrive.
Success continued to grow and by 2004, Nellsar had grown to include 6 different Homes around Kent and London.
Keeping it in the family
At this point, the company had become more than just a simple family business. It was now a well-known and regarded care provider with over 250 residents. More help was needed, so both daughters (Nella and Sarah – hence Nellsar!) joined the business, as finance and HR specialists.
As the company went from strength to strength, both daughters involved their partners and happily took Nellsar to its current size of 13 facilities with 600 beds.
Ragu remains the CEO of the organisation, with the day-to-day operations being led by Martin Barrett, one of the sons-in-law.
A home from home focus
Nellsar’s focus has never been to be the biggest. Our aim has been to make Nellsar Homes as caring, friendly, helpful, honest and supportive as the family homes we grew up in. We want to focus on each individual and get to know them as much as we can.
We believe our purpose is to facilitate the best possible lifestyle for those who have given so much to the world, but who now need supporting.
