It's great to see the changes being made to the home, it looks so much brighter and more welcoming since the refurbishment started and it is really nice that the gardens are being smartened up too. The staff in the home are fantastic, we can see how much they genuinely care for mum and just how hard they work. It would be good if there was the facility to take on more staff so that they are not so overstretched with their workloads. One thing we would like to see more of if at all possible, would be to have more frequent outings for the residents. Overall, we are very pleased with the level of care.

I think the quality and variety of food that is prepared for the resident is outstanding (the taste is also good since I have sampled many just to be helpful). I think the activities have greatly improved in the past two years and the staff never fail to be supportive, friendly and caring.
EG, granddaughter of resident, June 2017, The Old Residential Care Home in Kent, Dartford
My mother has been a resident for 17 months and has had excellent care from her first day. Her care has continually been of a very high standard and I have great confidence in all staff at all levels. I am regularly updated if there are any concerns as well as if my mother's health changes. The care home has a very friendly atmosphere at all times with cheery faces. Residents are kept as active as allows, staff work hard to make sure all the resident's needs are met at all times. There are meetings for relatives/relations periodically. All in all, a good care home, and I am pleased to have been able to get my mother a place.

One would have to go a long way to find a home to come anywhere near the excellence of Old Downs.

JH, daughter of resident, June 2017, The Old Residential Care Home in Kent, Dartford
My mother lived at the Old Downs Residential Care Centre from January 2015 until her death in March 2017. We got a good impression of the home straight away and mum settled in immediately. It provided a warm caring, friendly atmosphere and we cannot speak too highly of the staff. They were warm, friendly and caring and did everything they could to look after mum. They were magnificent in the final period when mum was on end of life care. A great big thank you to you all.

"I cannot fault the care and attention given to my mother over the time she spent at The Old Downs. The staff were at all times attentive treating their charges with care and dignity and the facilities excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend this home for anyone in need of residential dementia care."
NR, relative of resident, December 2015, The Old Residential Care Home in Kent, Dartford
"My mother has been at Old Downs for just under 4 years and had excellent treatment and care. They make the effort to not only consider her current situation but anticipate any changes in her condition and attempt to reassure her care as much as possible. We have always been made welcome and have found the staff communicative and friendly, nothing appears to be hidden form views."
CK, relative of resident, December 2014, The Old Residential Care Home in Kent, Dartford
"I am still immensely grateful to all the staff at The Old Downs. Anthony enjoys helping with the social activities and various tasks attached in that area. He has helped in a great degree to the caring and maintenance in the garden. He is apprehensive about the challenge of "moving on". However with support I'm sure it will work well."

A message from the Manager
Hello, my name is Caroline Cheeseman and I am the Home Manager for The Old Downs Residential Care Home situated in Hartley, Kent. I have worked in the care industry since 2000. I started my career in care in a local hospital’s Accident and Emergency department, which I really enjoyed, after seven years I decided to combine my management skills with my passion for care and became a Care Home Manager. I joined The Old Downs in May 2017 bringing 10 years’ experience of managing both Dementia Residential and Nursing Homes.
When I first came to see The Old Downs I was pleasantly surprised by the location of the Home. It is close enough to be included in a wonderful community as well as having a calm setting with spectacular views of the Kent countryside. As I sit in my office typing this message, the sun is shining and I can hear birds singing in the trees outside. This mirrors the calm and homely feel that was evident as soon as I stepped inside the front door.
I have always advised perspective customers to visit any Home and see how that Home “feels”. The passion and commitment that the team at The Old Downs have, to ensure that those living here are treated with kindness and compassion, comes across as being delivered in a way that we ourselves would want any of our own family members to be treated. We fully understand how it can be a difficult time for families when they embark on the journey of making the decision to hand over the care of their loved one to others. We offer our support to relatives and continue to work with them to get to know our residents on an individual basis. Our staff are trained in caring for those living with Dementia in a way which supports and promotes independence. Our residents are unique and the individualised, person-centred care that we provide enables them to feel safe and at home.
We provide Dementia Residential Care for 41 residents, with single rooms, some offer en-suite facilities. Our rooms are as individual as our residents and at present we are redecorating bedrooms throughout the Home to make them as bright and homely as possible. We encourage families to assist with helping to make their loved ones’ bedrooms personalised to create a home-from-home feeling.
We have several lounges and bright areas so that residents can roam around the ground floor with no restrictions. We provide three main meals a day with the addition of snacks and supper to maintain good nutrition. We have daily milk shakes and smoothies and offer a choice of desserts, which normally go down really well.
We have several secure garden areas that are also being refreshed for the summer. We have organised activities both inside and outside the Home including summer BBQs and garden parties, we have a Mini Bus for local trips to garden and shopping centres. Families are encouraged to participate in the running of the Home with regular meetings as well as being able to chat as and when they visit. No Home is perfect and we constantly strive to work towards solving any problems or concerns that anyone has in an open and honest way.
Please feel free to contact myself or any member of the team on 01474 702 146 should you have any questions or wish to visit us and we will be more than happy to help
