Nellsar Crafty Crown Competition for the coronation

Crowning the king and queen

At the weekend, we witnessed a truly historic event when King Charles III was crowed at his coronation, along with Queen Camilla. The wonderful royal occasion was watched by millions across the globe and our residents enjoyed tuning in to be part of the celebrations – arranging parties, entertainment and fantastic food to mark the day.

Crafty Crown competition

As part of the celebrations, we launched a competition at the beginning of April to mark the coronation and commemorate the king. We asked the residents and staff in our 13 Nellsar Homes to get creative and design an eye-catching coronation crown.

Just how they created their crown was up to them – picture, hanging decoration, floral display? – the world was their oyster and everyone got their royal thinking caps on!

Heading up the competition, our Recreation and Well-Being Manager Viv Stead commented: “The idea was to involve our residents in making something beautiful and memorable to display in their Home or garden that could be enjoyed by everyone for the coronation.”

A right royal response!

We are delighted to say that all of our Homes got well and truly behind the competition and worked hard to make their creative entries for judging on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 May.

Viv and a team of impartial judges looked over all the photos and descriptions sent from our Homes and had the very difficult job of choosing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

The results are in…

  • 1st Place (£300 for residents’ fund) – Bromley Park Care Home
A huge crown painted and decorated with handmade jewels and Union Jack hearts made from red, white and blue buttons. The team suspended it from the ceiling for all to see, together with Union Jack flags made from tissue paper. A fantastic centrepiece. Well done!
  • 2nd Place (£200 for residents’ fund) – Abbotsleigh Care Home
A beautiful crown decorated with colourful gems and pictures of the king throughout his life – an idea from two lady residents. Great memories!
  • 3rd Place (£100 for residents’ fund) – Silverpoint Court Residential Care Home
A delightful crown covered in sweets! The crown was taken around on the day of the coronation for their residents to choose a sweet. Delicious!

Huge thanks

Viv and the other judges were so impressed by all of our Homes’ entries – they had so much colour, creativity and thought put into them and truly added to the coronation spirit of the long weekend, when they looked fantastic displayed as part of the celebrations. We think King Charles and Queen Camilla would give them all a definite royal seal of approval!

Congratulating our teams, Viv said: “As always, you and your residents have put your heart and soul into this. As I have said before, you are ALL winners, and each of our Homes will receive a runners up certificate and a small gift of thanks. Our winners will be presented with their prizes over the next few weeks. Well done to everyone for taking part.”
